After the excess of chocolate and sweets over Valentine’s Day, I wanted something green and calming for my stomach. The house still holds treats—chocolate mousse, bags of candy the children collected, boxes of chocolates, and a few bakery cupcakes—but I preferred a fresh, wholesome option this morning. A velvety green smoothie felt like the perfect reset.


I swapped my usual green smoothie for a creamier version inspired by a recipe from Julia Mueller’s cookbook. The avocado adds richness and healthy fats, while blueberry yogurt gives a touch of sweetness and tang. Add banana for body and almond milk for a smooth finish.

Julia Mueller, author of Delicious Probiotic Drinks, shares approachable recipes for kombucha, kefir, homemade yogurt, and other fermented beverages. Her book inspired me to try simple probiotic drinks at home and to explore recipes that include homemade yogurt or store-bought Greek yogurt as convenient alternatives.

I drink smoothies frequently—often once or twice a day—and an avocado-based drink is one of my favorites. This Avocado Kale Superfood Smoothie pairs kale and avocado with blueberry yogurt and banana, blended with almond milk for a creamy texture. It works well as breakfast, a healthy snack, or a restorative post-holiday treat.


Julia’s book includes recipes for home-brewed ginger beer, lacto-fermented and cultured juices, and probiotic “cocktails” designed to support digestion, metabolism, and the immune system. I started with this straightforward green smoothie and am gradually trying other fermented drinks and homemade yogurt and kefir recipes.
