Chocolate Diya Peda is a delightful, festive twist on classic chocolate pedas, shaped to resemble traditional diyas and made to brighten your Diwali spread.

This version follows a simple milk powder peda method with cocoa powder added for a rich chocolate flavor and the warm, earthy color reminiscent of a diya. The result is a quick, attractive sweet that’s perfect for festive gifting or for decorating your home platter.
For those unfamiliar, a diya is a small clay oil lamp with a cotton wick, traditionally lit during Diwali to symbolize the victory of light over darkness. Lighting diyas and decorating with rangoli are central to Diwali celebrations, and these edible chocolate diyas are a fun way to add to that tradition.

If you follow this blog you’ll know I share many Diwali recipes; it’s one of my favorite festivals to cook for. This recipe is especially handy when you’re short on time: the chocolate peda mix takes just a few minutes to prepare and a few minutes in the microwave to set.
The Chocolate Diya Peda can be made as shaped diyas or as regular flat pedas if you’re pressed for time. Shaping them into diyas makes them look extra festive and fun to present.

The best part: this Chocolate Diya Peda takes only about 4 minutes of cooking time in the microwave and around 10–15 minutes total, including preparation and shaping. It’s ideal when you’re busy with Diwali cleaning, shopping, or other preparations but still want to make something homemade.

Chocolate Diya Peda | Diwali Indian sweet
Chocolate Diya Peda is a charming way to present chocolate pedas during Diwali. The cocoa gives them chocolate flavor and a diya-like color, while the milk powder base keeps the texture soft and creamy.

Ingredients
- 2 tbsp Ghee
- 1 (140 g/oz) condensed milk tin
- 1.5 cups Milk Powder
- 1/2 tsp Cardamom powder
- 2 tbsp Cocoa powder
- Sliced almonds (for the flame)
Instructions
- In a microwave-safe bowl, combine ghee, condensed milk, milk powder, and cardamom powder. Mix thoroughly to form a uniform mixture.
- Remove 2–3 tbsp of this mixture and keep it aside separately — this portion will be used to make the wicks for the diyas.
- Add 2 tbsp cocoa powder to the remaining mixture and mix well until the color and flavor are even.
- Microwave the chocolate mixture for 1 minute, stir, then microwave again for another minute. Repeat so the total microwave time is about 4 minutes, stirring after every minute.
- Allow the mixture to cool for about 30 minutes. While it cools, microwave the small portion you set aside for the wicks so it’s pliable.
- After cooling, divide the chocolate mixture into small portions and shape each into a diya form. Use the reserved mixture to make small wicks and place them on each diya.
- Top each wick with a sliced almond piece to resemble a flame. Let the pedas rest and air-dry for at least an hour before serving.
Notes
- If you’re short on time, shape them into regular flat pedas instead of diyas.
- Do not overcook in the microwave. Stir after every minute and keep total microwave time to around 4 minutes. Overcooking can make the pedas dry.
- You can perform the ball test (as used in milk powder burfi recipes) to check consistency before shaping.
- Remember to reserve a small portion of the mix for the wicks.
- Allow the pedas to air dry for at least an hour before serving for best texture.
- If you prefer, you can also prepare these on a gas stove following a milk-powder burfi style method instead of microwaving.

Enjoy these Chocolate Diya Pedas as part of your Diwali celebrations. They’re quick to make, visually appealing, and a tasty addition to any festive sweet platter.
Until next time,
Hugs
