Do your kids enjoy Halloween activities and Halloween-themed treats? If so, they’ll love making and coloring with molded Halloween crayons. Here’s a simple, kid-friendly tutorial on how to make crayons for Halloween—perfect for crafting with children or handing out as unique treats on Halloween night.

If your kids love to color, consider pairing these crayons with a crayon roll kids art kit for an organized way to store and carry their supplies.
If you enjoy this holiday as much as we do, try other Halloween activities and Halloween food ideas to extend the fun.
If you plan to give these crayons to other children, place 4–5 in a clear plastic bag and label it clearly as containing crayons so parents don’t mistake them for candy.
You will need:
- Old crayons
- Silicone Halloween-themed mold that is oven-safe

You can use any oven-safe silicone mold with Halloween shapes. I used a spider and web mold, but pumpkin, bat, or ghost molds work great too—especially if you match the crayon colors to the shapes. Note: once used for crayons, the mold can be hard to fully clean, so I wouldn’t recommend using the same mold for food afterward.
Start by choosing the colors you want. You can keep things traditional—black for spiders, white for webs—or get creative with green, purple, silver, yellow, and grey. Once you’ve picked the colors, let kids peel the paper wrappers off the crayons. Peeling is a fun task for little hands.
Break the peeled crayons into smaller pieces so they fit into the mold cavities. A useful tip: group crayons of similar thickness together. Chunkier crayons take longer to melt than thin ones, so mixing sizes can lead to uneven melting. How many pieces you need depends on the size of the mold—fill each cavity so the melted wax reaches the top.

Bake the filled silicone mold in a 250°F (about 120°C) oven until the crayons are fully melted—this usually takes around 10 minutes but check often so colors do not overheat. Once melted, carefully remove the mold from the oven and let it cool completely. Cooling allows the wax to solidify and makes removal easier.

When the mold is fully cooled, pop the crayons out by pushing the silicone inside out. Because these are such tempting little shapes, keep an eye on curious kids—mine discovered a few before I finished photographing them and were off coloring happily with their new Halloween crayons.

These handmade crayons are not only fun to use but make charming gifts for classmates, friends, or trick-or-treaters. If you plan to distribute them, remember to label packaging to avoid confusion with candy.

My kids were inspired to draw spider webs with their new crayons—an easy, seasonal craft that pairs perfectly with these shaped colors. I’ve made several batches and plan to bring more to Halloween events and parties.
