Last winter I seemed to catch every cold going and rarely felt fully well for long. I love running and try to get out three times a week, but constant colds made that difficult. This year I decided to be proactive and add a daily healthy smoothie to my routine to see if it helps my overall wellbeing.

We recently bought a compact blender and I’ve developed a couple of smoothie recipes I now make often. Both rely on fresh ginger, which adds a bright, spicy note and pairs well with tropical fruit.

What’s in the tropical ginger smoothie?

The tropical ginger smoothie combines banana, pineapple, mango and grated fresh ginger. The result is fruity and refreshing with a gentle spicy kick from the ginger.

Instead of using fruit juice, I now prefer to add a little ice-cold water as the liquid. This keeps the pure fruit flavors front and center and reduces the overall sugar content. Fruit juice can be high in natural sugars, so water is a simple, healthier option that still yields a delicious smoothie.

Overripe bananas work especially well in smoothies. If you usually save them for baking, try adding them to your blender instead — they lend sweetness and creaminess without needing any added sugar. Fully ripe yellow bananas are fine too.

Can you adapt this smoothie recipe?

Absolutely. Smoothies are flexible: most fruits blend well together. You can add apple or orange for a slightly different profile and still get a similar tropical vibe. A pinch of turmeric is another easy addition—turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and pairs nicely with ginger.

Do you need a high-speed blender to make this smoothie?

No — any jug blender or a good stick blender will work. A more powerful personal blender can handle tough ingredients like fresh ginger and fibrous vegetables more easily, producing an ultra-smooth texture, but it’s not essential.

Powerful blenders also excel at crushing frozen fruit and making thicker blends such as nice cream from frozen bananas. If you don’t have a high-speed model, just blend a bit longer and add a splash more water if needed.

If you enjoy this tropical ginger smoothie, try other fruit-forward options like berry and banana blends, or richer bowls that include avocado or yogurt for extra creaminess. Smoothies are a great way to experiment with flavors and boost daily fruit intake.
