One of the perks of my husband working for a German company is the treats that come with travel: wonderful chocolates, spirits and liqueurs often make their way home. While clearing a cabinet during a remodel, I found an opened bottle of kirsch I must have used when making a Black Forest cake. Kirsch is potent, so I used it sparingly—just the right amount stirred into Ocean Spray Cran~Cherry juice, and it was delicious.
Remodeling even a small area can be tiring and stressful, and a simple cocktail like this felt like the perfect pick-me-up. Kirsch is a clear, colorless fruit brandy distilled from sour cherries—stones and all. The cherry pits impart a delicate almond-like note that distinguishes kirsch from other cherry liqueurs. It’s a classic ingredient in German desserts such as the Black Forest cake, which I’ll have to bake again and share the recipe for soon.
If you’re unfamiliar with kirsch, a couple of notes: it’s strong, so add it sparingly. Strength can vary by brand, so always check the label for alcohol content and adjust to taste. A little goes a long way and the flavor pairs especially well with tart cranberry or cran-cherry juices.
With everything moved into the new fridge, my husband will likely need a hand getting the old one into the garage—remodeling never seems to stop. But before the day gets away, try this refreshing summer cocktail. It’s quick, simple, and perfect for warm evenings or casual company.
